    OSHI - Open Source Hybrid IP/SDN networking (and its emulation on Mininet and on distributed SDN testbeds)

    The introduction of SDN in IP backbones requires the coexistence of regular IP forwarding and SDN based forwarding. The former is typically applied to best effort Internet traffic, the latter can be used for different types of advanced services (VPNs, Virtual Leased Lines, Traffic Engineering...). In this paper we first introduce the architecture and the services of an "hybrid" IP/SDN networking scenario. Then we describe the design and implementation of an Open Source Hybrid IP/SDN (OSHI) node. It combines Quagga for OSPF routing and Open vSwitch for OpenFlow based switching on Linux. The availability of tools for experimental validation and performance evaluation of SDN solutions is fundamental for the evolution of SDN. We provide a set of open source tools that allow to facilitate the design of hybrid IP/SDN experimental networks, their deployment on Mininet or on distributed SDN research testbeds and their test. Finally, using the provided tools, we evaluate key performance aspects of the proposed solutions.     Dwarf satellites of high-z Lyman Break Galaxies: a free lunch for JWST

    We show that the James Webb Space Telescope will be able to detect dwarf satellites of high-zz Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). To this aim, we use cosmological simulations following the evolution of a typical M⋆≃1010M⊙M_\star\simeq10^{10}\rm M_\odot LBG up to z≃6z\simeq6, and analyse the observational properties of its five satellite dwarf galaxies (107M⊙<M⋆<109M⊙10^7{\rm M_\odot}<M_\star<10^9{\rm M_\odot}). Modelling their stellar emission and dust attenuation, we reconstruct their rest-frame UV-optical spectra for 6<z<6.56<z<6.5. JWST/NIRCam synthetic images show that the satellites can be spatially resolved from their host, and their emission is detectable by planned deep surveys. Moreover, we build synthetic spectral energy distributions and colour-magnitude diagrams for the satellites. We conclude that the color F200W−F356W\rm F200W-F356W is a powerful diagnostic tool for understanding their physical properties once they have been identified. For example, F200W−F356W â‰Č−0.25\rm F200W-F356W~\lesssim-0.25 can be used to identify star-bursting (SFR∌5 M⊙yr−1\rm SFR\sim5~M_\odot yr^{-1}), low-mass (M⋆â‰Č5×108M⊙M_\star\lesssim5\times 10^8\rm M_\odot) systems, with ∌80%\sim80\% of their stars being young and metal-poor (log⁥(Z⋆/Z⊙)<−0.5\log(Z_\star/Z_\odot) < -0.5).Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

    Quiescent low-mass galaxies observed by JWST in the Epoch of Reionization

    The surprising JWST discovery of a quiescent, low-mass (M⋆=108.7M⊙M_\star=10^{8.7} \rm M_\odot) galaxy at redshift z=7.3z=7.3 (JADES-GS-z7-01-QU) represents a unique opportunity to study the imprint of feedback processes on early galaxy evolution. We build a sample of 130 low-mass (M⋆â‰Č109.5M⊙M_\star\lesssim 10^{9.5} \rm M_\odot) galaxies from the SERRA cosmological zoom-in simulations, which show a feedback-regulated, bursty star formation history (SFH). The fraction of time spent in an active phase increases with the stellar mass from fduty≈0.6f_{duty}\approx 0.6 at M⋆≈107.5M⊙M_\star\approx 10^{7.5} \rm M_\odot to ≈0.99\approx 0.99 at M⋆≄109M⊙M_\star\geq 10^{9} \rm M_\odot, and it is in agreement with the value fduty≈0.75f_{duty}\approx 0.75 estimated for JADES-GS-z7-01-QU. On average, 30% of the galaxies are quiescent in the range 6<z<8.46 < z < 8.4; they become the dominant population at M⋆â‰Č108.3M⊙M_\star\lesssim 10^{8.3} \rm M_\odot. However, none of these quiescent systems matches the Spectral Energy Distribution of JADES-GS-z7-01-QU, unless their SFH is artificially truncated a few Myr after the main star formation peak. As supernova feedback can only act on a longer timescale (≳30 Myr\gtrsim 30 \rm \, Myr), this implies that the observed abrupt quenching must be caused by a faster physical mechanism, such as radiation-driven winds.Comment: submitted to ApJ Letters, 5 pages, 4 figure

    The research activity carried out in BINET project aims at designing a Business Intelligence framework based on Social Network technology, better known as Complex Networks in the healthcare field, in order to establish a platform to analyze data through non-conventional graph methodologies and interfaces (graph data-browsing). Scientific validation of methodologies used by the framework is carried out in the healthcare field and focuses on the analysis of therapeutic, time and spatial associations among the various treatments, such as outpatient, drug prescriptions, length of hospital stays etc., received by the patients recruited for the study, to find out correlations between treatments at the individual level and enabling patient "follow-up". Another aspect of the validation concerns the analysis of papers extracted from epidemiological and clinical databases in order to identify emerging technologies, standard of care, "benchmarking" among various operational units dealing with the same pathologies, as well as population profiling to enable identification of homogeneous groups, from a socio-demographic point of view and healthcare demand, subject to tailored prevention campaigns. A more specific application deals with the analysis of drug prescriptions to find out correlations between patient pathology profiles (derived from all treatments and diagnosis received by patients) and prescriptive behaviors of their general practitioners in order to define shared "guidelines" and identify standard practices to compare with practice guidelines.     Prediction of Impaired Performance in Trail Making Test in MCI Patients With Small Vessel Disease Using DTI Data

    Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a common condition in patients with diffuse hyperintensities of cerebral white matter (WM) in T2-weighted magnetic resonance images and cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). In MCI due to SVD, the most prominent feature of cognitive impairment lies in degradation of executive functions, i.e., of processes that supervise the organization and execution of complex behavior. The trail making test is a widely employed test sensitive to cognitive processing speed and executive functioning. MCI due to SVD has been hypothesized to be the effect of WM damage, and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a well-established technique for in vivo characterization of WM. We propose a machine learning scheme tailored to 1) predicting the impairment in executive functions in patients with MCI and SVD, and 2) examining the brain substrates of this impairment. We employed data from 40 MCI patients with SVD and created feature vectors by averaging mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy maps within 50 WM regions of interest. We trained support vector machines (SVMs) with polynomial as well as radial basis function kernels using different DTI-derived features while simultaneously optimizing parameters in leave-one-out nested cross validation. The best performance was obtained using MD features only and linear kernel SVMs, which were able to distinguish an impaired performance with high sensitivity (72.7%-89.5%), specificity (71.4%-83.3%), and accuracy (77.5%-80.0%). While brain substrates of executive functions are still debated, feature ranking confirm that MD in several WM regions, not limited to the frontal lobes, are truly predictive of executive functions

    On the CFD Analysis of a Stratified Taylor-Couette System Dedicated to the Fabrication of Nanosensors

    Since the pioneering work of Taylor, the analysis of flow regimes of incompressible, viscous fluids contained in circular Couette systems with independently rotating cylinders have charmed many researchers. The characteristics of such kind of flows have been considered for some industrial applications. Recently, Taylor-Couette flows found an innovative application in the production of optical fiber nanotips, to be used in molecular biology and medical diagnostic fields. Starting from the activity of Barucci et al., the present work concerns the numerical analysis of a Taylor-Couette system composed by two coaxial counter-rotating cylinders with low aspect ratio and radius ratio, filled with three stratified fluids. An accurate analysis of the flow regimes is performed, considering both the variation of inner and outer rotational speed and the reduction of fiber radius due to etching process. The large variety of individuated flow configurations provides useful information about the possible use of the Taylor-Couette system in a wide range of engineering applications. For the present case, the final objective is to provide accurate information to manufacturers of fiber nanotips about the expected flow regimes, thus helping them in the setup of the control process that will be used to generate high-quality products

    Immunosuppressant-Responsive Enteropathy and Non-Responsive Enteropathy in Dogs: Prognostic Factors, Short- and Long-Term Follow Up

    A multicentre prospective study was performed to assess whether clinical, hematobiochemical, endoscopic and histopathological parameters were associated with mortality, clinical response and relapse of disease in short- and long-term follow-up of a total of 165 dogs with chronic inflammatory enteropathy, of which 150 had immunosuppressant responsive enteropathy (IRE), and 15 had non-responsive enteropathy (NRE) dogs. Clinical severity (CCECAI) was evaluated from presentation (T0) to 18 months (T18) from diagnosis. T0 body condition score (BCS), selected haematological parameters and endoscopic and histopathological scores were evaluated. Presence/absence of histopathological duodenal lesions was recorded. Responders were evaluated using CCECAI at T1. Relapse was evaluated from T3 to T18. Long-term responders included dogs who responded at T1 and showed no relapse. Dogs were divided into responders/non-responders, survivors/non-survivors and relapsed/non-relapsed. At T1, 15/165 dogs (9%) were considered NRE. Sixteen dogs (11%) were considered relapsed at T3, 8% at T6 and 10% at T12, and none of 96 dogs relapsed at T18. NREs showed significantly lower BCS than IREs. Non-survivors showed a significantly lower serum albumin concentration and BCS than survivors. Non-responders, relapsed or non-survivors had higher presence of lacteal dilatation compared to long-term responders. Dogs with IRE showed a good clinical course with a low relapse rate, with only a few dogs in the NRE group. Reduction of BCS, albumin and lacteal dilatation at diagnosis may be considered negative prognostic factors for response, mortality and long-term disease remission

    Error Resilient Video Streaming with BCH Code Protection in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Video streaming in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is a promising and challenging application for enabling high-value services. In such a context, the reduced amount ofavailable bandwidth, as well as the low-computational power available for acquiring and processing video frames, imposes the transmission of low resolution images at a low frame rate. Considering the aforementioned limitations, the amount of information carried by each video frame must be considered of utmost importance and preserved, as much as possible, against network losses that could introduce possible artifacts in the reconstructed dynamics of the scene.In this paper we first evaluate the impact of the bit error rate on the quality of the received video stream in a real scenario, then we propose a forward error correction technique based on the use of BCH codes with the aim of preserving the video quality. The proposed technique, against already proposed techniques in the WSN research field, has been specially designed to maintain a full back-compatibility with the IEEE802.15.4 standard in order to create a suitable solution aiming at accomplishing the Internet of Things (IoT) vision. Performance results evaluated in terms of Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) show that the proposed solution reaches a PSNR improvement of 4.16 dB with respect to an unprotected transmission, while requiring an additional overhead equal to 22.51% in number of transmitted bits, and minimal impact on frame rate reduction and energy consumption. When higher protection levels have been imposed, bigger PSNR values have been experienced at the cost of an increased additional overhead, lower frame rates, and bigger energy consumption values

    Human deciduous teeth from the Middle Stone Age layers of Sibudu Cave (South Africa)

    Abstract: In the African Pleistocene, the fossil evidence for early Homo sapiens populations is still relatively limited. Here we present two additional specimens (two deciduous teeth) recovered from the Middle Stone Age (MSA) deposits of Sibudu Cave (KwaZulu‐Natal, South Africa). We describe their morphology and metrics, using three‐dimensional models of the teeth obtained from high‐resolution micro‐CT images. The first specimen is a Ldm1 (HUM. TO 1) recovered in the BS5 layer dated 77.3 ± 2.7 ka, and associated with stone tools assigned to the “pre‐Still Bay” assemblage. The other specimen is a Rdi1 (HUM. TO 2) coming from the Pinkish Grey Sand (PGS) layer, dated 64.7±2.3 ka, and associated with a Howieson’s Poort industry. Both teeth are well preserved, with minor post mortem cracks not affecting the overall morphology, and they comprise the intact, worn crown and the remnants of the roots, naturally resorbed. A large carious lesion occupies most of the distal face and part of the occlusal surface in the Ldm1; also a chip of enamel is missing from the disto‐buccal corner. In the Rdi1 average enamel thickness and relative enamel thickness values have been measured. For both teeth, we compared mesiodistal (MD) and bucco‐lingual (BL) diameters with those of other Late Pleistocene deciduous teeth and extant Homo sapiens. The analysis has shown that the teeth are comparable in size with the other MSA specimens described in the literature

    ICONA: a peer-to-peer approach for Software Defined Wide Area Networks using ONOS

    Several Internet Service Providers (ISP) are plan- ning to innovate their infrastructures through a process of network softwarisation and programmability. The Software- Defined-Network (SDN) paradigm aims at improving the design, configuration, maintenance and service provisioning agility of the network through a centralised software control plane which is in charge of managing the entire system. This is easily achievable for local area networks, typical of data centres, where the benefits of having programmable access to the entire network is not restricted by latency. However, in Wide Area Networks, a centralised control plane limits the speed of responsiveness in reaction to time-constrained network events due to unavoidable latencies caused by physical distances. A logical step towards robustness in SDN is to distribute the load of the control plane between entities, each taking care of a portion of the entire geographical network and each providing an east-west communication interface to enable programmability of the entire network. Moreover, a key objective of an SDN control plane targeting an ISP networks is the east-west interface with external domains under the control of other providers. In this article we present ICONA (Inter Cluster Onos Network Application), a tool that has the objective of enabling programmable networks to span multiple clusters of controllers within either a single or multiple administrative domains. In particular, the paper describes the architecture behind ICONA and provides an initial evaluation obtained on a preliminary version of the tool, built on top of the cutting-edge network controller ONOS, Hummingbird release
